Lansdowne Strand Hotel, Calne

The Lansdowne Strand Hotel is a landmark building in Oldbury Tours’ home town of Calne. The hotel has very recently been refurbished to a very high standard; the remarkable exterior, the communal areas and many of the 25 ensuite bedrooms having had an extensive makeover. The rest of the rooms will soon also be updated. There is an excellent restaurant on site which has earned the hotel two AA rosettes for culinary excellence, a panelled bar and plenty of space to sit and relax on the ground floor. The old coaching inn also has a courtyard garden. Arkells, a local long-established brewery have created a beer specially for the hotel bar called Harris Ale in memory of the town’s heritage. The Harris brothers developed the Wiltshire Cure for preserving hams back in the 18th century and their buildings dominated the centre of Calne until 1984. The Lansdowne Strand is also a very historic building and a reminder of the importance of Calne as a coaching stop between London and the port of Bristol. Until 1969 when the M4 was built the road that Calne straddles was the main route between London and the west of England and the Lansdowne Strand is right in the middle of town.
